Kinesiology Taping

Kinesiology is the study of motion and the structures that make it possible, an athletic tape was developed in the 1970s for human use/application and is used in athletics across the USA, Europe and Asia.  Its application has been adapted for animals and been used for the last 10 years.

It works by stretching with the body as it moves without restricting motion and providing support.  It contains no medications, is breathable and hypoallergenic.  It decompresses the skin and underlying structures by lifting the hair which in turn lifts the skin and interacts with the neurosensory receptors. Lifting the skin creates space in the tissue taking away pressure from inflammation, blood vessels and tight muscles.

It has a wide range of benefits to include:

  • Decreasing pain (naturally and quickly by stimulating the mechanoreceptor nerves and inhibiting the nociceptors nerves (the pain generators).
  • Supporting muscles and joints (adding stability, reducing further injury and improving function).
  • Improving blood and lymph circulation.
  • Reducing inflammation.
  • Increasing proprioception and in turn promoting proper movement.
  • Supporting joint mobility without causing any restriction by adhering around the joint, and providing pressure relief.
  • Prolonging the effects of a manual therapy such as massage.

There are a variety of taping applications that are available and typical tapings may be used for:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • TMJ pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Poll/Atlas pain
  • Scar tissue
  • Stocking up
  • Suspensory ligament support
  • Digital flexor support
  • Sacro-iliac support.
  • Reducing side effects of arthritis like pain and stiffness.
